Verstappen names the best F1 drivers: Hamilton is not on the list.
According to The Sun: Lewis Hamilton received tough criticism from Max Verstappen in the driver rankings of Formula 1.
Throughout the 2021 season, they fiercely battled for the title. This year ended with an emotional finale in Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen claimed victory, denying Hamilton the chance to win his eighth world championship.
Since then, the Brit has managed to win only two races, while Verstappen already has three titles and has won 46 of the last 84 races.
This season, Hamilton moved from Mercedes to Ferrari but has not yet been able to bring the Italian team to the podium.
Verstappen's comments on other drivers
In an interview with the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Verstappen did not mention Hamilton when asked about the strongest Formula 1 drivers today. Instead, he focused on Fernando Alonso and Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc.
“Phew, it's tough, but I think right now... I've always considered Charles Leclerc to be a very good driver in qualifying.”
Verstappen also noted that Leclerc performs well in overtakes.
“I've always loved watching Fernando drive, even in the past. He's a real fighter. I really like that.”
Alonso was named the most intelligent driver on track. Verstappen pointed out:
“I would always choose Fernando Alonso for his experience.”
Verstappen characterized Alonso as “brilliant in defense” and emphasized his undeniable competitive mentality.
When asked about the most charismatic driver on the track, Verstappen refused to name anyone, stressing that it is not important for driving a Formula 1 car.
About the greatest drivers in history
When asked about the greatest driver in Formula 1 history, Verstappen also declined to name a specific person, saying:
“For me, it’s impossible to say. There are many great drivers from different eras. I think it’s more important to simply appreciate all the great drivers that have ever existed.”
Competing at the highest level of motorsport, Verstappen shows respect for competing drivers, acknowledging their talent and accomplishments. His words about Leclerc and Alonso reflect the rise of a new generation of drivers capable of competing for victory alongside well-known names.
This situation reflects the ongoing evolution of Formula 1, where competition among drivers becomes increasingly intense, and the new generation of drivers strives to prove their abilities on the track alongside those who have already left their mark in history.
