Berlin Urges Budapest to Drop Objections as Germany Pushes for Ukraine's EU Accession Talks.
Statement from Germany's Federal Chancellor
According to Espreso.tv: During a press conference in Berlin alongside Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Madjar, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the need for European unity and continued backing for Ukraine. Merz made clear that while Budapest must address bilateral concerns—particularly regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine—these issues should not obstruct broader European support for Kyiv. He expressed optimism that negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership could begin as early as the first chapter.
Ukraine-Hungary Talks Progress
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Madjar had previously signaled readiness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only if Kyiv meets demands concerning the Hungarian national minority. In this context, Merz emphasized the importance of Hungary realigning itself with Europe, arguing that such a shift would strengthen all countries in the region as well as the causes of freedom and peace.
Currently, Ukraine and Hungary are close to reaching a technical-level agreement. President Zelenskyy has shown willingness to engage in direct talks with Prime Minister Madjar, a move that could advance bilateral relations. Merz also noted that European unity is critically important during these challenging times.
The evolving relationship between Ukraine and Hungary, coupled with Germany's support, could prove vital for regional stability. Ongoing negotiations between the two nations may not only improve bilateral ties but also reinforce European cohesion in the face of current challenges.
- Resolving issues related to the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine could serve as a key step toward Ukraine's integration into the European Union.
