Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized the importance of cooperation with Washington for Ukraine's future independence. She stated that without the support of the USA and NATO, Ukraine would not be able to maintain its independence after the Russian invasion. She made this statement during a speech at the Christian Democratic Union event in Düsseldorf on January 18.

Merkel stressed that Putin's invasion of Ukraine violated the fundamental principle of European order - territorial integrity. Only with the support of the USA and NATO can we prevent Putin's victory and preserve Ukraine's independence.

Merkel highlighted the importance of transatlantic partnership, especially in light of the actions of newly elected US President Donald Trump. She recognized Trump as a 'special president' who will protect the interests of his country.

However, Merkel noted that Trump does not believe in win-win situations in multilateral cooperation, viewing them as a constant game of winners and losers. She called for responding to Trump and jointly uniting European interests.

Merkel emphasized that the issues of war and peace are relevant and cannot be just an abstract discussion. She also noted that the USA would make a mistake if it does not seek allies in Europe, as Europe is the guarantor of survival.
