Trump on the rearmament of Ukraine: what he said about the plan in case of Putin's sabotage.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his position on the possible rearmament of Ukraine, noting that he does not want to discuss this topic in advance in case Vladimir Putin rejects the 20-point peace plan or drags out negotiations.
Trump spoke about this in an interview with The New York Times journalist David S. Sanger:
"I don't want to talk about this. I just don't want to be in a situation where I have to say this because I feel obligated to try to save lives. You know, this war costs us nothing. We are actually making money off the war".
The head of state mentioned his predecessor Joe Biden, claiming that he "spent $350 billion" on Ukraine. Trump added:
"And I think that's exactly the number... So I made a deal".
When asked about expenses, Trump noted that he managed to "get the money back" through an agreement related to rare earth resources, commenting:
"I made a deal. I said: I want to get this money back because Biden is a fool. He is a mindless person, and he gave you $350 billion. I told Ukraine: 'I want this money back for America.' And I got a deal on rare earth metals that could be worth much more than that. I got the money back. But that fool gave away $350 billion".
Trump also added that currently the U.S. supplies weapons not directly to Ukraine, but through NATO. He noted:
"I sell them weapons, and they pay full price. I don't even sell it directly to Ukraine — I sell to NATO. And NATO now has a lot of money. I achieved a defense spending increase from 2% to 5%".
He emphasized that his main goal is to stop the war and save human lives:
"I'm doing this not for the money. I want to save 25-30 thousand lives each month. I can't believe it. Imagine an NFL stadium filled with 70 thousand people — half of that stadium dies every month. It's absurd".
At the same time, NATO representatives assured that arms supplies to Ukraine did not decrease after Trump's decision to stop direct transfers.
Trump also noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly has no cards but has other alternatives. According to a Western journalist, the current crisis in the transatlantic alliance is caused by internal problems in the West, not Trump's policy.
These comments by Trump highlight his ambiguous approach to the situation in Ukraine and efforts to preserve American interests in the region. While his statements have sparked various reactions, global politics and support for Ukraine remain important topics of discussion on the international stage.
