Mykhailo Mudryk Tops List of Worst Premier League Transfers Ever.
The Premier League's All-Time Worst Transfers
According to Novyny.live: In a ranking compiled by ESPN, Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk has been named the worst transfer in the history of the English Premier League. The Ukrainian winger moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea for a fee of €70 million. Since his arrival, his output of 10 goals and 11 assists across 73 matches has fallen far short of expectations, earning him this unwanted accolade. The Premier League is known for its high-stakes transfer market, where such expensive signings face immense pressure to perform immediately.
ESPN's list features 50 signings deemed to have failed. Mudryk occupies the top spot, while other high-profile, costly moves also received poor ratings. Notable examples include:
- Antony, who joined Manchester United from Ajax for €95 million;
- Nicolas Pepe, signed by Arsenal for €80 million.
Compounding a Damaged Reputation
Mudryk's situation was further complicated in December 2024 when the banned substance Meldonium was detected in a doping test, potentially damaging his reputation even more. Other infamous transfers featured on the list are:
- Ali Dia's free transfer to Southampton;
- Daniel Drinkwater's €37.9 million move from Leicester City to Chelsea;
- Romelu Lukaku's €113 million return to Chelsea from Inter Milan.
The case of Mudryk underscores the significant risks clubs take in the transfer market. A failed high-value signing not only impacts the player's career but can also harm the financial and sporting reputation of the investing club, highlighting the critical importance of thorough scouting and recruitment strategy.
