A video of this incident, which occurred after Kamil Majarczak's victory in a five-set match, quickly went viral, and Scherek was labeled as 'the most hated person on the internet'.
The embarrassment led to numerous fake comments from fraudulent accounts posing as the businessman. However, his real reaction was published on his official Facebook page.
In his statement, Scherek noted that in the emotions following the victory, he mistakenly decided that the tennis player was gesturing to him.
“Due to the situation during Kamil Majarczak's match at the US Open, I want to sincerely apologize to the boy, his family, and all fans as well as the player himself. I made a huge mistake.”
He added: “In the emotions, in the crowd that was rejoicing in victory, I mistakenly took the cap, thinking that the tennis player had taken it off for my sons, who had previously asked for autographs.
“The misunderstanding led me to extend my hand. Today I understand that I acted as if I deliberately took his souvenir from the boy.”
“That was not my intention, but it does not lessen the fact that I offended the boy and disappointed the fans.”
He also noted: “The cap was returned to the boy, and I again apologize to his family. I hope I was able to partially rectify the harm caused.”
