Pensioners in England and Wales receive £300: who will receive tax reports.
According to The Sun: This winter, millions of pensioners will receive tax bills of £300 from HMRC.
Starting in November, about nine million pensioners will begin receiving between £100 and £300 in their bank accounts.
GettyThis additional payment is part of the Winter Fuel Payment provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to support elderly people with their fuel costs during the cold months.
Following the cancellation of the previous £300 last year, only those receiving certain benefits could expect support. This caused outrage as about 10 million pensioners lost their winter payments due to the cuts.
While this saved the treasury £1.4 billion, public protest was strong.
In response, the government decided to change its policy, reinstating payments for most pensioners. They will now be able to receive this assistance, ranging from £100 to £300, but note that if your income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim this amount.
According to BBC data, about two million pensioners may be required to repay the assistance in taxes due to these changes.
What happens next?
If you have not opted out of the payment, HMRC will change your tax code and send you the relevant letter.
This means your winter fuel payment will be deducted from your income, and HMRC will collect this amount monthly.
For example, if you receive £100 and your income is £35,000, you will repay approximately £9 monthly.
The collection will begin in April 2026, in the new tax year.
How to opt-out of future collections
The deadline to opt-out of the winter fuel payment for 2025-2026 has already passed.
However, you will be able to opt-out of receiving assistance for 2026-2027 starting in April 2026.
To do this, you will need to fill out an online form or call the hotline at 0800 731 0160.
If you decide to do this online, you will need information such as your National Insurance number.
Who is not entitled to payment?
You can receive the Winter Fuel Payment if you were born before September 22, 1959, and live in England or Wales.
But there are exceptions when individuals cannot receive this assistance, including:
- living outside England and Wales
- being in hospital receiving free treatment throughout the week from September 15 to September 21, 2025, and in the previous year
- needing leave to enter the UK, and their leave does not permit access to public funds
- being in prison throughout the week from September 15 to September 21, 2025
Most people receive this assistance automatically, but if you believe you may miss it, you can apply.
Thus, this winter payment becomes an important support for millions of pensioners in the UK, especially amid rising living costs. The government is trying to rectify past mistakes to ensure a decent standard of living for the elderly during the cold season.
