Japan's Defense Minister: Ukraine's War Is a Direct Concern for Our Nation

Statement from Japan's Defense Minister

According to Novyny.live: On February 15, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi issued a warning about the threats posed by Russia and North Korea in light of the war in Ukraine. Koizumi stated that North Korea has dispatched thousands of military personnel to support Russia, highlighting a growing regional danger. This assessment reflects Japan's heightened security posture in the face of deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Support for Ukraine and NATO Initiative

Koizumi further announced that Japan will join a NATO-led initiative and begin purchasing armaments for Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine is not 'somewhere far away' for Japan,” said Shinjiro Koizumi.
He added that
“there, they are studying a new way of fighting—with drones, artificial intelligence, in cyberspace, and with traditional weapons,” said Shinjiro Koizumi.

In late January 2026, Ukraine and Japan signed a grant agreement worth approximately 4 billion Japanese yen, underscoring Tokyo's intent to actively support Ukraine amid escalating threats.

“That is why I say—Ukraine is not a distant problem,” said Shinjiro Koizumi.

Minister Koizumi's remarks signal not only Japan's strategic stance in global affairs but also its readiness to act in response to emerging security challenges. This marks a significant shift for a nation whose post-war constitution has historically limited its military engagements. Cooperation with NATO and support for Ukraine demonstrate Tokyo's aim to bolster regional stability and deter potential aggression from Russia and its allies. These developments could substantially impact the military and political landscape in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as global security frameworks.
