Trump's Peace Plan for Ukraine: Why Russia Threatens European Troops

According to ТСН: President Donald Trump's peace plan for ending the war in Ukraine faces significant difficulties.

These problems became evident during Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago. Ahead of the meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the peace initiatives. He emphasized that Russia would never agree to the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territories, which is an important part of the security plan developed by Zelensky in cooperation with the Trump administration. Lavrov also noted that should European troops appear, they would become a 'legitimate target' for Russian forces.

Obstacles in Negotiations

Along with Trump, Zelensky is discussing issues related to parts of eastern Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The peace plan, containing 20 points, proposes that the U.S. provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to NATO's Article V, however, the details remain unclear.

According to NYT, three main problems arising during the negotiations can be highlighted:

  1. Russia is making no concessions. All negotiations between Americans and Ukrainians focus on the compromises that Zelensky is willing to accept, as well as what the U.S. can offer. Putin has reaffirmed his demands for extending control over Ukrainian territories.

  2. The complexity of a long-term security plan. Despite territorial issues, the main obstacle is developing mechanisms to prevent new Russian invasions.

  3. Domestic political difficulties in the U.S. Trump must convince his political base and allies of the necessity to provide Ukraine with guaranteed military assistance in the event of a new Russian attack.

Trump and Zelensky's meeting was not particularly bright. The Ukrainian leader quickly adapted to the unpredictable statements of the American president, while Trump admitted that the peace settlement process turned out to be more complicated than he expected.

Insignificant or minor, but it is important that the current initiative represents the most detailed attempt to resolve the conflict in nearly four years of war. Although the parties officially deny it, outlines of a final resolution are already beginning to take shape. Experts note that progress would be impossible without the initiation of dialogue between Trump and Putin.

It was also previously reported that Trump's rhetoric at the meeting with Zelensky could appear advantageous to Moscow.

This situation underscores the complexity of international relations, particularly between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. At the same time, willingness to compromise and engage in dialogue could be the key to achieving lasting peace in the region. It remains to be seen whether further negotiations will yield positive results in line with the interests of all parties.
