Russian Entry Rules Tighten for Moldovan Men: Detentions and Interrogations Loom.
Detentions at the Russian Border
According to Espreso.tv: Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning about potential detentions of men at Russia’s border, along with new entry requirements for those traveling into the country. The detentions are likely to affect males aged 18 to 60, particularly those holding recently issued passports or who have previously traveled to Ukraine. This advisory comes amid heightened scrutiny for Moldovan citizens, many of whom have strong ties to Russia but now face increased risks when crossing the border.
According to the information, interrogations of detained individuals can last anywhere from 3 to 12 hours. During this time, people are forced to undergo a polygraph test and grant access to their electronic devices. Border officials question detainees about trips to Ukraine and their stance on the war. Refusing to comply with these demands can lead to arrest. Those arrested face pressure to sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, effectively coercing them into military service.
Shutdown of the 'Russian House'
Additionally, on July 4, the 'Russian House' in Chișinău ceased operations, marking the expiration of a 1998 agreement between Moldova and Russia on that very day. This closure signals a further deterioration in bilateral ties.
These new requirements and detentions may indicate Russia’s tightening control over men crossing its border, which could have serious consequences for Moldovan citizens and their rights. Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and rising tensions between Russia and Western nations, such policies could be part of a broader Russian strategy to bolster its military resources. This may also shape public attitudes toward Russian policies and affect the overall relationship between Moldova and Russia.
