Monobank Experiences Technical Disruption

According to TSN.ua: Monobank is currently experiencing a significant technical outage that has disrupted its core financial services. Customers have reported being unable to make peer-to-peer transfers between cards or process payments, causing concern among users who depend on these services for daily transactions. This disruption highlights the vulnerability of digital banking platforms.

On February 22, Oleg Gorokhovsky reported that Monobank had been targeted by a hacker attack, which may be linked to the ongoing technical issues. He stated,

"Hackers attempted to attack the bank; they did not succeed in anything."

Separately, A-Bank also suffered a cyberattack, resulting in funds being withdrawn from some customer accounts. However, A-Bank clients were assured that all withdrawn funds have been fully restored.

Escalating Cyber Threats

In a related development, Russian hackers have attacked a contractor company that provides services for the online shop of Ukraine's National Bank. This indicates a rising trend of cyber threats targeting Ukrainian financial institutions, part of a broader pattern of digital aggression in the region.

As a result of these events, Monobank is currently facing the following service disruptions:

  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) card transfers are non-functional,
  • Payments and payouts cannot be processed,
  • The issuance of new loans and management of existing credit limits has been suspended.

Bank customers are awaiting a resolution to these problems and the full restoration of normal service operations.

The technical failures at Monobank and the attempted cyberattacks underscore the growing risks for financial institutions in Ukraine, which must remain vigilant against such threats. In light of these incidents, it is crucial for banks to enhance their security protocols and ensure rapid incident response to minimize customer inconvenience and maintain trust in their services.
