Ukrainians restricted from free drinks: due to new law, popular promotion banned.
According to The Sun: Customers of the MORRISONS supermarket are outraged by the cancellation of a well-known cafe offer, which occurred due to new rules aimed at combating obesity.
Under new laws that came into effect on October 1, the retailer canceled free refills for hot chocolate and mocha to reduce the availability of sugary products.
MorrisonsMorrisons has complied with the new requirements and limited free refills on sugary drinks.
The new regulations prohibit promotions such as 'buy one – get one free' for sugary products, as well as free offers on some non-alcoholic beverages.
This ban applies to free refills of hot drinks with added sugar, such as hot chocolate and sweetened coffees. Morrisons has become the first major retailer to abandon this option.
Previously, the supermarket offered free refills for all drinks in its cafe, but now this rule does not apply to hot chocolate and mocha due to the new legislative changes.
Representatives of Morrisons stated that free refills were introduced to 'help customers stay warm during the cold'.
The Wetherspoons chain, which offers free refills of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for £1.71, may also be forced to exclude hot chocolate from its offer.
However, the chain has not yet confirmed potential changes to its policy.
Morrisons customers are actively expressing their outrage on social media, posting photos of new announcements near drink dispensers.
“Due to recent changes in legislation, our hot chocolate and mocha are now excluded from our free refill offer.”
One customer wrote on X: “You can’t have free refills for hot chocolate or mocha, but you can pay for your obesity.”
Another outraged user commented: “How can we tolerate this? Why does anyone think this is normal?”
“I was just informed that I can no longer get a free refill of hot chocolate or mocha,” said another customer.
“Because the GOVERNMENT is losing tax revenue from sugar-free drinks. It seems that Morrisons risks being penalized if it continues to offer sugary drinks for free.”
The ban on free refills applies only to drinks with added sugar, as confirmed by the Department of Health and Social Care, so regular tea and coffee are not covered by this rule.
Earlier in the week, fans of Nando's were also disappointed to learn that they could no longer receive free refills of classic Coca-Cola due to new rules.
“Nando’s banned free drinks? We are living in the end times,” reacted one angry customer.
Nando's guests can still enjoy unlimited amounts of calorie-free and zero-sugar soft drinks, such as Fanta Zero, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite Zero, and Dr Pepper Zero.
Other chains that offer free refills, such as Five Guys, Toby Carvery, and Pizza Hut, may also cease this promotion.
A representative from the Department of Health and Social Care stated: “Obesity denies children the chance to have the best start in life, prepares them for health problems for life, and costs the NHS billions.”
“Ending promotions such as buy one – get one free on unhealthy products was first proposed by the previous government in 2020 and came into effect this week.”

These changes apply not only to Morrisons but also to many other supermarkets. New rules limit promotional offers on sugary drinks, urging consumers to choose healthier options. This has caused outrage among customers who are accustomed to a certain level of service and convenience.
In the future, we may see changes in other cafe and restaurant chains, as new laws affect the entire industry and customers continue to actively express their opinions about these new changes.
