Trump's grievances against Putin: how it will affect the blockade of Russian tankers.
Trump's confrontational stance towards Putin
According to ТСН: Donald Trump is again demonstrating a confrontational attitude towards Putin, which may influence future US actions against the Russian shadow fleet.
Igor Eisenberg, an expert from Manhattan University, notes that recent detentions of vessels do not mean a complete blockade of the entire shadow fleet of the Russian Federation, but the situation still alarms the Kremlin.
"I cannot claim that Donald Trump has decided to detain all tankers of the Russian shadow fleet. At this point, all such actions are related to Venezuela. However, we can expect two interesting things," Eisenberg explained.
Trump's attitude and Europe's role
The first of these aspects is the personal attitude of the US president towards Putin.
"It is clear that Trump is upset with Putin, as has happened before. In such cases, he does things that Putin certainly does not like. There are reasons to believe that he will continue to act in this direction," stated the professor.
The second important aspect concerns the role of European NATO countries. Eisenberg emphasized that a significant portion of Russian oil exports passes through the Baltic Sea, making this region key to exerting pressure on Russia.
"There is yet another very interesting point—whether European NATO countries will respond to the presence of Russian shadow tankers in the Baltic Sea. For Europeans, the example set by the US has been extremely important in recent years," he said.
The expert reminded that a similar logic has already applied to military assistance to Ukraine.
"When the US starts doing something, the Europeans follow suit. This has been the case with all types of military aid. Therefore, for me, the key question is whether NATO countries will start detaining tankers of the Russian shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea, as this is where most of the Russian oil exports come from," the expert summarized.
Earlier, it was reported that among the crew of the oil tanker Bella-1, which the US Coast Guard detained for violating sanctions against the Russian Federation, are citizens of Ukraine.
It was also reported that the US seized a fifth tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet.
This situation highlights how issues of international security and economics intertwine in the relations between the US and Russia. It is obvious that Trump's actions could significantly influence geopolitical positions in the region, and the reaction of European countries also plays an important role in shaping a collective response to Russian actions in the Baltic Sea.
