A primary school teacher was participating in the event when her horse fell on her after a failed jump over the third obstacle. As a result of the fall, the woman sustained severe chest and abdominal injuries.

Northamptonshire's senior coroner, Ann Pember, noted that other competitors had successfully cleared the same obstacle prior to the accident.

Tribute from grieving colleagues and students

After the tragedy, many people expressed their condolences to Sarah, who left behind a seven-year-old daughter. Les Ball, the headmaster of the school where she worked, stated:

“Sarah was an inspiring teacher, always full of energy and life. She shared her love for learning, and particularly for sports, with every child and positively impacted many children and adults for years. She always sought to encourage children to be the best they can be in everything they do, but also took the time to provide opportunities for fun, play, and laughter. Sarah always cared for others and was a great support for her colleagues when needed. She will be greatly missed.”

Sarah and her horse were competing at the BE100 level, designed for beginners. She recently achieved victory with a new seven-year-old horse in the BE90 class at the Swalcliffe Park competition.

After the accident, the three-day Aston-le-Walls tournament was canceled.

British Eventing previously reported that medical personnel arrived at the scene of the incident “immediately.” Her horse, MGH HERA, underwent an assessment by a veterinary team on site, and fortunately, did not sustain any injuries.

In a statement, British Eventing stated that “a full review of the incident will now be conducted in accordance with our established protocols.”
