Ukraine’s Water Supply Infrastructure Lacks Physical Protection, Lawmaker Admits.
Vulnerability of Ukraine’s Water Supply Sites
According to Novyny.live: Serhiy Nahornyak, a member of parliament from the 'Servant of the People' party, has stated that no physical defense measures have been implemented for Ukraine’s water supply facilities. Although such actions are outlined in the country’s 'Resilience Plans,' no concrete steps have been taken so far. Nahornyak’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the safety of critical infrastructure in the ongoing conflict.
'To be honest, I still don’t understand how we are supposed to protect them.' Serhiy Nahornyak
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that Russia may target water supply systems. Since early April 2023, Moscow has escalated its operations, launching over 700 drones in a single day and focusing primarily on energy infrastructure. This raises serious alarms about the security of other vital systems, including water supply networks.
Urgency of Safeguarding Water Systems
The need for robust physical protection of water infrastructure is becoming more pressing as the conflict intensifies. While Ukraine has drafted 'Resilience Plans,' their execution remains uncertain. Nahornyak stresses that this issue demands immediate attention.
Protecting water supply facilities is a critical component of national security, especially amid ongoing hostilities. Failure to act could have severe consequences for civilians if these sites become targets. Prioritizing the implementation of the 'Resilience Plans' and enforcing physical safeguards should be a top government priority to avert potential crises in the future.
