NatWest closes 46 mobile branches: which cities are losing banking services

According to The Sun: NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland have decided to close 46 mobile banking branches, and this decision will take effect on January 9, 2026.

These closures will leave thousands of customers without access to essential banking services, especially in areas already lacking traditional branches.

Mobile branches play a key role in communities without standard banking institutions, providing services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, and bill payments.

They visit designated locations up to five days a week, excluding holidays.

The loss of mobile branches will force customers to seek alternatives — traveling further or relying on online banking, which may pose challenges for those not accustomed to digital technology.

These changes will affect England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, impacting both NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland.

What alternatives exist for banking services?

If you need to access basic banking services, you don’t necessarily have to travel to a big city with a branch.

You can use one of 11,684 Post Office branches for basic banking transactions, but new account openings, loans, and mortgages are not available there.

You can find out about the nearest Post Office branch at postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Many banks also offer mobile banking services, bringing buses into your area with the same functionality as traditional branches.

Other banks utilize spaces like village halls or libraries to provide mobile banking services.

It’s recommended to contact your bank to inquire about available mobile services and schedules in your area.

To compensate for closed branches across the UK, new super ATMs are being rolled out.

These ATMs provide the ability to withdraw cash, check balances, change PINs, and deposit cash.

Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, Lloyds, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Ulster Bank have already made agreements to accept deposits at super ATMs.

Additionally, the UK plans to open 250 banking hubs by the end of 2025.

These hubs typically have a cash service, allowing customers to easily carry out basic banking transactions.

In each hub, there is a space where customers can consult with staff representing their banks on more complex issues.

What services do banking hubs offer?

Banking hubs offer a range of services to fill the gaps that arise after the closing of local branches.

These hubs, operating through the Post Office, allow customers to carry out routine transactions such as depositing and withdrawing money, as well as balance inquiries.

Each hub has private booths for discussing more complex issues with banking staff.

Staff from different banks provide their services on a rotational basis, ensuring access to a wide range of banking functions throughout the week.

Customers can also receive consultations on various financial products, including loans, mortgages, and savings accounts.
