A total of 26 NatWest branches will close in August, with more closures scheduled for October.

The first branches to close will be in Cwmbran (South Wales) and Wisbech (Cambridgeshire).

The next two — in Leicester and Rayleigh — will close tomorrow.

Also on Wednesday, the branch in Halesowen will close, while on Thursday — in Bristol (Fishponds) and Llangefni.

This is part of a global trend, as banks increasingly shift to online banking.

NatWest has previously noted that over 80% of its customers use digital services.

Research shows that 39% of people over 65 do not use online banking, putting their financial security at risk.

Since 2015, the NatWest group, which includes the Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has closed 1,409 branches.

What to do if your local bank is closing

People can continue to access basic banking services without having to travel to another town for service.

There are 11,684 Post Office branches available for basic banking tasks — however, new accounts or loans are not opened there.

You can find the nearest Post Office branch at the website postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Many banks also offer mobile banking services, visiting customers' areas with buses that provide necessary services.

Some banks use premises, such as community halls or libraries, to provide such services.

It is advisable to contact your bank to find out about available mobile services and their schedule.

Moreover, new super ATMs are appearing across the UK where branch closures have created difficulties for the public in accessing banking services.

These ATMs allow you to withdraw cash, check balances, change PINs, and deposit cash.

Which other banks are closing branches?

Santander will close a fifth of its branches in an attempt to cut costs.

Last month, the bank closed seven branches, and three locations lost their service.

It is expected that about 300 Lloyds branches will close in 2025-2026.

The Bank of Scotland has also announced the closing of four branches by the end of the year.

As of December last year, 64% of branches that were operational at the beginning of 2015 have already closed.

Branch closures peaked in 2017, when 867 branches were closed across the Kingdom.

A similar situation was observed in 2018 when 792 branches were closed.
