NBU Reduced Complaints About Dollar Exchange by 5 Times: What Has Changed.
According to inkorr.com: The National Bank of Ukraine is pleased to inform citizens about positive changes! The number of complaints regarding the exchange of 'old' dollars for new banknotes has significantly decreased. In the summer of 2023, the NBU took a series of measures that truly yielded results - the number of complaints dropped by five times, according to official information.
NBU Measures to Improve the Situation
To address this issue, the National Bank implemented several measures. It improved the legal framework, canceled the list of signs of wear on foreign banknotes, and launched an information campaign for citizens and non-banking financial institutions. However, there are still certain difficulties.
In 2024, the NBU conducted 150 inspections at exchange points of 17 non-banking financial institutions. Following this, fines amounting to a total of 5.65 million hryvnias were imposed.
Problems with Illegal Schemes
The NBU notes that the main problem remains illegal exchange schemes in the shadow sector, where unlicensed institutions operate. Their activities require law enforcement intervention.
Restrictions on Banknote Exchange
It should be noted that according to legislation, the exchange of dollars should be carried out without restrictions based on the year of issuance and denomination. The greatest difficulties arise when exchanging 100-dollar banknotes issued in 1996, 2003, and 2006. The lack of interest in accepting them is related to outdated security features and low demand for such banknotes.
If you are refused an exchange, what should you do? Banks may refuse the exchange if the money is counterfeit or significantly worn. In case of problems, citizens have the right to contact the NBU with their complaint.
The National Bank of Ukraine is actively working to improve the conditions for exchanging 'old' dollar banknotes for new ones, implementing various measures and lifting existing restrictions. However, the issue of exchanging certain denominations and combating illegal exchange in the shadow sector remains relevant. When difficulties arise during the exchange, citizens can contact the NBU to resolve conflicts.
