Vilnius Airport Closed Due to Threat from Belarus: What Happened.
According to ТСН: On the evening of Saturday, December 6, Vilnius Airport found itself at the center of a tense situation due to a security threat from Belarus. The airport administration announced flight restrictions, as stated in an official post on Facebook.
“Hybrid Attack on Aviation and Society”
Airport personnel clearly indicated the cause of the incident: the airspace over Vilnius was closed due to the detection of navigation markers resembling balloons (weather balloons) in critical flight safety zones. These actions were characterized as deliberate aggression.
“Due to the hybrid attack from Belarus against Lithuania, civil aviation, and society… restrictions on the use of airspace over Vilnius Airport have been implemented,” the administration noted.
Duration of Restrictions and Advice for Passengers
Security measures came into effect at 6:06 PM local time and were lifted at 7:32 PM, when the airport resumed operations. Passengers whose flights were delayed or canceled due to this incident are advised to contact their airlines.
This is not the first time suspicious objects from Belarus have created difficulties for neighboring countries, forcing them to respond to threats in the sky. It is worth noting that last month, a drone flying in a no-fly zone also disrupted the operations at Vilnius Airport. At that time, a security service detained the operator, who was handed over to the Military Police for further investigation.
The situation at Vilnius Airport underscores the seriousness of emerging threats from neighboring countries and the necessity for appropriate safety measures in the airspace. In such conditions, coordination between aviation authorities and law enforcement agencies remains crucial to ensuring the safety of passengers and aircraft.
