Ukraine Aims to Cut Off Crimea and Destroy Russian Targets with Drone Strikes.
Strategy to Isolate Crimea and Expand Drone Warfare
According to Espreso.tv: Robert Brovdi, the commander of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces, has outlined plans to isolate the Crimean Peninsula and eliminate Russian military assets using drone technology. Over the first five months of 2026, Ukrainian forces destroyed 174 Russian air defense systems valued at approximately $5.4 billion, according to his statement. During that same period, more than 50,900 Russian troops were killed.
Brovdi emphasized that drone units, which currently make up just 2.5% of the army, are responsible for roughly one-third of all Russian casualties. The average daily toll includes:
- 337 soldiers killed;
- 1,169 targets struck.
The average cost of eliminating a single occupier over the past year was $918. The number of medium-range combat sorties has increased 28-fold since last June, while deep strikes into Russian territory have nearly quadrupled. For context, these figures highlight Ukraine’s growing reliance on unmanned systems to offset conventional military disadvantages.
Drone Unit Expansion and Strategic Goals
Brovdi’s plans call for doubling the share of drone units to 5% of the armed forces. He stated that a key objective is to make it extremely difficult for any Russian military personnel or defense industry workers to remain in Crimea.
“We will isolate Crimea in the near future,” Brovdi declared, adding that “we are opening the door to vast spaces where the pain of war must also be felt in the consciousness of Russia’s residents.”
In response to strikes on military facilities, on June 9, a Ukrainian official named Madiar reported that Russia had banned military traffic on the ‘Novorossiya’ highway starting June 7. Attacks on this route have also caused fuel shortages in Crimea. The leadership of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces continues to actively pursue its plans, which, according to their assessments, will significantly impact the military situation in the region.
These announced plans to isolate Crimea and aggressively deploy drones reflect a growing innovation in Ukraine’s military strategy, potentially shifting the regional balance of power. The importance of these actions lies not only in destroying military targets but also in applying psychological pressure on Russian forces and their civilian support base. The rising effectiveness of drone attacks could pose new tactical challenges for Russia, forcing it to reconsider its own military approaches in the area.
