Cancellation of the match due to player injury

According to The Sun: Scunthorpe's head coach Andy Butler stated that the Wealdstone team refused to return to the field to complete the match after the injury of Daniel Nkrumah.

The match was stopped, with only stoppage time remaining.

This is already the second case this week where a Scunthorpe match has been canceled; a day earlier, player Archie Harris received a head injury in a match against Eastleigh.

Butler noted that he was ready to continue the game with Wealdstone and claims that the referee and the league supported this opinion, but the Wealdstone players refused to return to the field.

He informed

BBC Radio Humberside
: “Their players refused to come out. The referee wanted them to come out, and the league also supported this, but they refused, for some reason.”

“From conversations, I understood that the players were not in the right mindset after seeing the injury of one of their colleagues.”

“I have never seen anything like this twice in a row. The incident at Eastleigh was completely different. Player safety is a priority. This was a head injury, and I agree with that 100%.”

“This was not a spinal injury, it was a shoulder injury — it popped out and is now back in place. I remember dislocating my shoulder on this field and getting back to normal without issues.”

“I am not saying the players were exaggerating. I must be cautious, but I know my players would have continued the game.”

“My players acted professionally and admirably, ready to resume the match. I am proud of my team.”

After the match was canceled, Scunthorpe announced that the incident has been referred to the National League.

At the time of cancellation, Scunthorpe was leading 2-1, and Butler believes the result should stand, as the Wealdstone team voluntarily refused to play.

He added: “If the result is not counted, it will set a precedent in future matches — if a team is not getting the desired result, remaining short-handed and using all substitutions, it can simply refuse to come back out.”

“They forfeited by refusing to come out.”

Scunthorpe is currently waiting for confirmation from the National League regarding possible rematches with Eastleigh and Wealdstone.

As part of the 2023/24 National League South campaign, matches between Eastbourne Borough and Truro City were replayed after being canceled due to a serious player injury in the 63rd minute.

SunSport has contacted Wealdstone and the National League for comment.

This situation has sparked further discussions on player safety in football, as injuries can have serious repercussions. The National League's decisions may also influence future regulations and rules regarding the continuation of matches in case of player injuries. We will monitor the situation.
