Russia Launches Large-Scale Air Attack on Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Russia carried out a significant aerial assault against Ukraine overnight on February 17, employing a mix of missiles and drones. Beginning at 6:00 PM on February 16, the attack involved the following arsenal:

  • Four 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles,
  • Twenty Kh-101 cruise missiles,
  • Four 'Iskander-K' cruise missiles,
  • One Kh-59/69 guided air-to-surface missile.

In addition, the assault included 396 attack drones, primarily of the Shahed type.

Ukrainian Defense Forces Respond

Ukrainian air defense units successfully countered the majority of the incoming threats. As of 9:30 AM, they had shot down or neutralized 392 aerial targets. The intercepted weapons included:

  • All twenty Kh-101 cruise missiles,
  • All four 'Iskander-K' cruise missiles,
  • The single Kh-59/69 guided missile,
  • 367 attack drones.

Despite the high interception rate, impacts from four ballistic missiles and 18 attack drones were recorded at 13 locations. Debris from downed targets also fell at eight other sites. This sustained air campaign is part of Russia's ongoing effort to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses with massed strikes.

This attack is part of the continuing regional escalation and highlights the increased activity of Russian forces in Ukraine's airspace.

The high effectiveness of Ukraine's air defense, which managed to destroy most of the attacking targets, underscores the country's capability to defend its territory from aggression. The situation remains fluid, and the subsequent actions of both sides could significantly influence the conflict's trajectory.
