Ukraine has received a modern mine countermeasure vessel: how it will clear the Black Sea.
According to inkorr.com: Ukraine has received a modern mine countermeasure vessel of the Alkmaar class, which is capable of performing mine-clearing operations in the waters of the Black Sea. This was reported by the spokesperson of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Captain 2nd rank Dmytro Pletenchuk.
This means a real capability for us to clear our waters. The mine contamination is enormous, and we still face the consequences not only of the current war but also of the Second and even the First World Wars in the Black Sea. Therefore, there is more than enough work to be done, and the need for such vessels is immense.
Capabilities of the New Vessel
This new vessel is a full-fledged mine countermeasure ship with powerful functionality capable of independently detecting mine threats and conducting clearance at various depths. Ships of this type have already been successfully used in the Atlantic Ocean, so their capabilities will also be beneficial in the Black Sea.
Current Operations and Plans
The spokesperson of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasized that mine-clearing operations are currently underway, but their scope is still limited. These measures are important for protecting the grain corridor and ensuring the safety of maritime shipping.
It is planned that full-fledged mine-clearing operations will become possible after improving the security situation, when vessels can directly enter the waters of the Black Sea. The mine-clearing process may take from three to five years.
The new Alkmaar class mine countermeasure vessel will be an important element for clearing the waters of the Black Sea. This will require significant efforts and resources, but it will also enhance safety at sea.
