Germany and the USA create universal software for Ukrainian drones - FT.
The German concern Rheinmetall collaborates with Auterion to develop standards for managing autonomous drones
The German military technology manufacturer Rheinmetall is cooperating with the American company Auterion to create common operational standards for managing autonomous drones. This collaboration is important in the context of the transition to unmanned systems. According to Auterion's CEO Lorenz Maier, their software is already used by drones in Ukraine.
Auterion is developing an operating system that allows clients to integrate various drones on one platform and incorporate different manufacturers into a common architecture. According to Rheinmetall's Chief Digital Officer Timo Haas, this will enable effective deployment of unmanned systems, which is particularly relevant in Ukraine, where over two hundred different unmanned aerial systems are in operation.
Auterion is already part of the U.S. Department of Defense initiative to develop an open-source standard for autonomous systems. The company hopes that the collaboration with Rheinmetall will help spread this approach among NATO allies.
The Russian defense industry is also increasing its production of drones, allowing Russia to enhance the number of drones it uses to attack Ukraine. Russia is even trying to develop drones with artificial intelligence.
It is worth noting that over the past week, Russia has used a significant number of aerial bombs, strike drones, and rockets of various types against Ukraine. The release of aerial targets by the Russian Federation in the fall of 2024 quadrupled compared to 2023.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also signed an order regarding new restrictions for individuals working within the Russian military system.
