The Nobel Committee announced the laureate of the Peace Prize.
The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Nihon Hidankyo organization
The Nihon Hidankyo organization, representing the Japanese councils of atomic bombing victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024. The recognition was granted for their efforts in the fight for nuclear disarmament. This news was announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.
According to the committee's announcement, 286 nominations were submitted this year, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations. Thus, the number of candidates significantly decreased compared to previous years.
The Nobel Prize laureates have already been announced in the categories of medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature. The prize laureate in economics will be announced on Monday, October 14.
The distinctive feature of the Nobel Peace Prize is that the laureates are not chosen in Stockholm, Sweden. These awards are determined by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, which consists of five members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.
In recent years, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, the Ukrainian "Center for Civil Liberties," the Russian human rights organization "Memorial," and the head of the Belarusian human rights center "Viasna" - Ales Bialiatski.
In 2021, the laureates of the prize were journalist from the Philippines Maria Ressa and Russian journalist, editor-in-chief of the publication "Novaya Gazeta" Dmitry Muratov. In 2020, the award was received by the World Food Programme for combating hunger on the planet.
It is worth noting that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.
