Club Dismantled Wall After Player's Death: What Changed in Security

According to The Sun: The non-league club destroyed the wall that former Arsenal player Billy Vigar crashed into, leading to his tragic death.

The player from Chichester City collided with a barrier during an Isthmian Premier League match at Wingate & Finchley last month.

Vigar, 21, was placed in a medically induced coma after hitting his head against the wall.

The match was suspended after 15 minutes and ultimately canceled when he was taken to the hospital.

He suffered a serious head injury, and surgery could not save his life.

Sadly, he passed away a few days later, on September 25.

After the tragedy, the Football Association assured that a perimeter wall safety review would take place in the National League.

Meanwhile, representatives of Wingate & Finchley have already taken steps to enhance safety at the Maurice Rebak stadium.

According to the Daily Mail, work to improve the situation has started.

The stadium was compliant with current regulations, but the club decided to completely demolish the wall.

This decision was made after a petition to ban brick walls around pitches gathered over 4000 signatures.

Regarding the emergency review, an FA representative stated:

“This will include looking for ways we can help National League clubs identify and implement additional measures at their stadiums which they feel may help reduce potential safety risks.”

At the same time, the Professional Footballers' Association called for an investigation and demanded that players “should not be exposed to unnecessary and avoidable risk.”

Vigar, from Worthing, West Sussex, had a youth career at Arsenal starting from the age of 14 and signed a professional contract in July 2022.

He progressed to the U21 team in North London and had loans at Derby County U21 and Eastbourne.

He left the club in 2024 without making it to the first team, joining Hastings United in the Non-League Premier before moving to Chichester.

Full Statement from Arsenal

Everyone at Arsenal Football Club deeply regrets the tragic death of Chichester City forward and former Arsenal Academy player, Billy Vigar.

Billy joined our academy on a schoolboy contract at the age of 14 after being spotted at his local club Hove Rivervale FC, and he made a name for himself as a forward at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his debut season.

In 2020, his performances earned him a scholarship, and he joined us full-time for the 2020/21 season, with his intake including current players Charles Sagoe Jr., Remi Mitchell, and others like Omari Hutchinson, Charlie Patino, and Brook Norton-Cuffey.

Quick, powerful, and determined, his first season on scholarship was marred by a serious ligament injury, but he made up for lost time in his second, scoring four goals in 18 youth team matches and signing professional terms with the club at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Billy represented us at PL2 and EFL Trophy and proved his worth in various attacking positions, even temporarily playing in defense – his versatility shows the dedication to the coaching staff and team.

He had loan spells at Derby County and Eastbourne, and at the end of the 2023/24 season returned to his native south, signing with Hastings United – ahead of his move to Chichester just last month.

In addition to his considerable talent, Billy will always be remembered for his love of the game, pride in representing our football club – he once described the day he was spotted by our scouts as “the most important day of his life” – and for the character that all loved both teammates and coaches alike.

Our deepest condolences go to the Vigar family and his friends during this incredibly tough time.

The tragic death of Billy Vigar has been a serious blow not only to his family and friends but also to the football community. It highlights the importance of safety in stadiums and prompts urgent action to prevent similar incidents in the future. Clubs and associations must take responsibility to ensure safe conditions for players to avoid such tragedies from happening in the future.
