Details of the Epidemic

The 13-night cruise began on September 19 from San Diego, with a scheduled arrival in Miami on Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the outbreak on September 28.

According to CDC information, "The main symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting... [caused by] norovirus." Tests showed that 94 out of 1874 passengers reported illness, accounting for 5% of the total. Additionally, 4 out of 883 crew members (0.5%) fell ill.

However, there are concerns that the number of cases has risen. One passenger, leaving a message on social media, noted:

“The number is now higher. I’m on board, and my father was sick with norovirus.”

Another passenger, who also

“on the ship,”
added: “Since this is a 13-night cruise, the average age of the passengers is quite high, around 70 years old – one woman is 102 years old.”

Opinions on Cruises

Many people on social media express concerns about the risks of illness during long cruises, calling them

“floating Petri dishes,”
and noting that cruise ships can harbor many bacteria.

Norovirus: What is it?

Norovirus is easily transmitted and causes unpleasant symptoms. Symptoms can appear as soon as 12-48 hours after infection. Norovirus infections usually occur in closed, crowded places such as hospitals, nursing homes, and of course, cruise liners.

Safety Measures

The CDC confirmed the measures taken by Royal Caribbean International to minimize the spread of the virus:

  • Timely collection of stool samples from the sick;
  • Isolation of sick passengers and crew members;
  • Increased cleaning and disinfection standards.

“Contact the ship's medical facility for free consulting and treatment.”

Letter to Passengers of Serenade of the Seas

Passengers are advised to wash their hands thoroughly after using the restroom and before eating.

“Sanitizing gel is not a substitute for thorough handwashing with soap and warm water.”

Experience with Norovirus

This is the second outbreak of norovirus on Royal Caribbean cruise liners in two months. In July, an outbreak was also reported on the Navigator of the Seas, where over 140 people suffered from similar symptoms.

Travel Insurance

AAA recommends that passengers

“Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect their investments in case of a medical emergency or any interruption during travel.”

As of 2024, 72% of American cruise passengers choose the Caribbean as a popular vacation destination.

This epidemic on the cruise liner again underscores the importance of adhering to safety measures during travel. The high risk of infections in closed spaces and large gatherings makes preventive measures necessary. Only careful attention to personal hygiene and safe practices can help prevent the spread of viruses on such journeys.
