British brand Irregular Choice closes its last store: massive clearance sale announced

According to The Sun: Nostalgic British shoe brand has closed its last store, but customers can still shop online during a massive 'clearance sale'.

This unique brand, popular worldwide, features characters from movies and pop culture, such as Darth Vader, Disney princesses, and Shaggy and Scooby-Doo characters.

At its peak, Irregular Choice had stores in Hong Kong, New York, and Carnaby Street in London. The store in Brighton closed on September 28.

Customers can save up to 70% on shoes, sneakers, and accessories during the 'everything must go' sale.

Irregular Choice was founded by designer Dan Sullivan in 1999 with the aim of 'helping people stand out from the crowd'.

Emotional Statement

A video posted by Dan on social media earlier this month contained a “very important and difficult message”:

“The significant challenges we have faced in recent years, caused by the impact of the pandemic, changes in retail, rising costs, economic uncertainty, and the liquidation of our main distributor, who owes us a huge amount of money, have created a perfect storm.”
Customers traveled from all over the world to visit Irregular Choice in Brighton.

The first Irregular Choice store opened in New York in 2007, followed two years later by the store on Carnaby Street, London.

The last store in Brighton closed on September 28 after opening in 2010.

In a statement on the Irregular Choice website, Dan thanked his customers and emphasized the 'incredible' staff:

“I would like to thank all our wonderful staff, past and present, who have done everything possible to keep us going for 26 years.”

Beacon of Hope

The statement highlighted hope for the brand's fans, offering colorful sneakers and high-heeled shoes adorned with sequins:

“I hope this is not goodbye forever – IC embodied creativity, fun, and diversity that I have aimed to bring to the world over the last 26 years.”
The company launched a massive sale with discounts of up to 70% after the closure announcement.

The closure of Irregular Choice has been another blow for struggling retail, which has faced difficulties due to the rise of online shopping and the coronavirus pandemic.

High inflation since 2022 has also limited shoppers' budgets, while companies grapple with rising labor, tax, and energy costs.

The Centre for Retail Research called the sector a “permanent crisis” since the financial crisis of 2008.

Data from the Centre shows that 7,537 stores closed in 2024 due to the difficulties of 34 retailers.

This situation underscores the growing challenges in the retail world, where brands are forced to adapt to new market conditions. While Irregular Choice, which became a symbol of creativity in the footwear industry, closes its doors, other brands may get a chance to refine their strategies in response to these changes.
