New ATM Fraud Scheme Emerges

According to TSN.ua: Fraudsters have developed a fresh method for stealing money from ATMs, dubbed the 'invisible thread' technique, which allows them to swipe cards and capture victims' PIN codes. This approach involves inserting a thin nylon thread into the ATM's card slot. As a result, the machine fails to return the card, making it appear as though a technical glitch has occurred.

While the victim tries to resolve the issue with the ATM, the scammer seizes the chance to observe the PIN as the user re-enters it. Once the victim walks away, the criminal retrieves the card and withdraws cash using the stolen credentials. This scam is particularly dangerous because victims may never realize they were targeted.

How to Protect Yourself from These Scams

To stay safe, experts recommend the following precautions:

  • Use contactless payment methods whenever possible;
  • Cover the keypad while entering your PIN;
  • Avoid using ATMs when strangers are standing too close;
  • If your card gets stuck, do not leave the area—immediately contact your bank or law enforcement.

Recently, reports have also surfaced about fraud schemes involving 'silent' calls, which may be part of automated systems used to verify active phone numbers.

As technology evolves, scammers continue to refine their tactics, making them increasingly dangerous for ATM users. It is crucial for consumers to stay informed about emerging fraud schemes and exercise caution when using financial services. Raising awareness and following basic safety guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to these criminals.
