Cultural Support in Ukraine
Zelensky announced the 'Thousand Springs' program on June 6, 2023, emphasizing that billions of hryvnias would be guaranteed annually to bolster culture. The final results of the initiative are set to be revealed on June 12, 2023. The president stated:
'This year is just the start, and support for Ukrainian culture will only grow from here.'
He also thanked participants for their early engagement, noting that roughly 17% of applications come from first-time creators.
Recently, the Ukrainian National Commission for UNESCO condemned Russia's attack on Kyiv on the night of May 24. Ukraine is urging UNESCO to take action against Russia for cultural genocide amid the ongoing war. The 'Thousand Springs' program could serve as a pivotal step in restoring and sustaining Ukrainian cultural identity during these challenging times.
The launch of 'Thousand Springs' highlights the growing recognition of culture's role in national identity, especially during wartime. By funding creative projects, the initiative aims not only to preserve Ukraine's heritage but also to foster new talent and innovative ideas across various artistic fields. The high level of public participation underscores a strong demand for cultural support and a collective desire to safeguard Ukrainian culture amid the country's current hardships.
