Ukrainian Drivers Face Hurdles at Romanian Border

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian motorists are now encountering significant difficulties when attempting to cross into Romania. The country has introduced a new mandatory requirement: a valid vehicle technical inspection certificate. This rule applies to all Ukrainian-registered cars, including those merely transiting through the country. Without this document and a complete set of required paperwork, border crossing can be denied or severely delayed.

This development adds another layer of complexity for Ukrainians traveling abroad, many of whom rely on road routes through neighboring EU states. The full list of required documents for entry into Romania now includes:

  • A biometric passport or valid visa,
  • Vehicle registration documents,
  • Medical insurance,
  • Proof of the purpose of the trip,
  • Military registration documents for men aged 18–60,
  • A power of attorney if driving a vehicle not registered in the driver's name.

Restricted and Prohibited Items for Entry

In addition to the new documentation rules, Romania enforces strict customs regulations on certain goods. Travelers are prohibited from bringing in:

  • Meat products,
  • Dairy products,
  • Honey,
  • Weapons,
  • Narcotics,
  • Pirated goods,
  • Animals without proper permits.

Furthermore, carrying cash exceeding 10,000 euros without declaration is illegal.

For visa-free travel, Ukrainians must possess a valid biometric passport. The standard Schengen Area rule applies, allowing a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros remains a compulsory condition for border crossing.

Consequently, these new requirements could substantially complicate travel plans for Ukrainian drivers. Being fully prepared with all necessary documents and aware of all restrictions is crucial to avoid problems at the border.

Romania's new demand for a vehicle inspection certificate is part of broader national efforts to enhance border security controls. This move may signal a wider regional trend toward stricter immigration and customs enforcement, potentially affecting tourist flows and transit routes for Ukrainian motorists.

Travelers are strongly advised to stay informed about legislative changes and comply with all requirements to ensure a smooth border crossing process.
