Ukraine and Russia Conduct Major Prisoner Swap, Returning 200 Defenders Each.
Ukraine and Russia Exchange Prisoners of War
According to UATV: On March 5, 2023, Ukraine and Russia carried out a major prisoner exchange, each side returning 200 captured military personnel. The swap took place on the territory of Belarus, where both parties handed over the prisoners. Such exchanges are a rare point of cooperation in the ongoing conflict.
The majority of the Russian service members who were returned had been held in Ukrainian captivity for less than a year. Specifically, 175 of the 200 Russian troops were captured in 2025. Following the exchange, the Russian military personnel were transferred to an assembly point in the Chernihiv region.
Today saw the first stage of the '200 for 200' exchange. And tomorrow, if nothing is postponed or disrupted, we expect a '300 for 300' swap.
Iryna Krynytsia, representative of one of the parties
The prisoner exchange represents a significant step in re-establishing communication between the conflicting parties and could form a basis for further negotiations. This swap indicates efforts from both sides to initiate dialogue despite the continuing hostilities.
A successful exchange can help build trust and open the door to new initiatives aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The subsequent stages of prisoner swaps may well determine the future trajectory of relations between Ukraine and Russia.
