The President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, Vadym Hutsait, congratulated Kirsty Coventry on her election as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In his congratulatory message, Hutsait also thanked Thomas Bach for his many years of service as IOC president.

Congratulations to the newly elected president of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry. I wish you success in this new phase. Together with you, we hope for further development of the Olympic movement and new great achievements. Thank you to Thomas Bach for his dedicated many years of service as IOC president. It was a great honor to work with you. Congratulations to Thomas Bach on being elected honorary lifetime president of the IOC. The entire Ukrainian Olympic community looks forward to fruitful cooperation and mutual support from the International Olympic Committee on the way to new victories,» - stated Hutsait.

The International Olympic Committee has elected a new president of the organization. Following the elections, Kirsty Coventry became the new chair of the IOC.

Coventry is the first woman to lead the International Olympic Committee. Overall, she is the eighth president in the history of the IOC.

Kirsty Coventry: What is known about the new IOC president

  • Kirsty Coventry is a 41-year-old Zimbabwean official and former swimmer.
  • As an athlete, she was a 7-Time Olympic medalist and an 8-time world championship medalist.
  • Since 2019, Coventry has served as the Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation in Zimbabwe. She was re-elected for a second term in 2023.
  • Since 2012, she has been a member of the International Olympic Committee and has been part of the Executive Committee since 2023.

Coventry will replace Thomas Bach as IOC president on June 24, 2025.

It is worth noting that the IOC responded to Tribuna.com's inquiry about a photo of organization leader Thomas Bach with Russian skier with neutral status Varvara Prokhorova, who holds the rank of ensign in the Russian army.

«Any individual neutral athlete recognized as such by the international federation should be treated the same as any other competing athlete,» - reads the response.

It is worth noting that Varvara Prokhorova met with the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach.

«The morning started in great company with Mr. Thomas Bach and an Olympic souvenir,» - Prokhorova signed her photo with Bach.

When asked to «resolve the issue» with Thomas, Varvara responded, «Yes, we had a conversation. And we invited him to Elbrus.»
