Odessa Flooded by Record Rains: Causes and Consequences.
Extreme Rains in Odessa: Causes and Consequences
According to inkorr.com: On September 30, 2025, Odessa received up to 94 mm of precipitation, which is double the usual monthly norm.
Anastasia Chigaeva, senior researcher at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, noted that such weather extremes are becoming increasingly common in Ukraine. Over the past decade, 14 instances of heavy rains have been recorded in Odessa, compared to only 2-3 in the previous ten years.
“In Odessa, we experienced a nearly typical autumn circulation for our latitudes, where warm, moisture-laden air masses formed over the Black Sea interacted with colder anticyclones over the land,'the scientist said.
Research shows that sea surface temperature also affects such anomalous rainfall. However, the problem lies not only in the amount of precipitation but also in the outdated drainage system of the city, which cannot handle such volumes of water, leading to flooding.
Experts believe this is one of the consequences of climate change, leading to an increase in extreme weather events, concluded Anastasia Chigaeva.
Thus, on September 30, 2025, record rains were observed in Odessa, indicating an increase in extreme weather events in the region. The causes of this precipitation are related to autumn atmospheric circulation and the increased temperature of seawater. The city's infrastructure is not prepared for such volumes of water, causing serious drainage issues.
