Olympic champion Nahornyi and chess traitor Karjakin placed under EU sanctions.

Olympic champion Mykyta Nahornyi and chess player Serhiy Karjakin have been included in the EU sanctions list. This was reported by the EU press service.
Serhiy Karjakin is a senator of the Federation Council of Russia, representing the illegally annexed Crimea since September 12, 2024. He was previously a professional chess player but was suspended due to his statements in support of Russia's war against Ukraine. Karjakin continues to support the war by spreading Russian propaganda and visiting occupied territories. He also collects military supplies for Russian forces. Such actions by Karjakin undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine. This is stated in the EU's announcement.
Mykyta Nahornyi, who has also been included in the EU sanctions list, was involved in the abduction and transfer of Ukrainian children from occupied territories to Russia. He openly supported Russia's war against Ukraine by spreading propaganda and disinformation. Such actions by Nahornyi also undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine. According to him, he offered to deliver gifts to Russian troops fighting in Eastern Ukraine.
Both athletes are known for their achievements. Mykyta Nahornyi is an Olympic champion who has won three victories at the world championships and eight victories at the European championships. Serhiy Karjakin has also had success in chess, winning the FIDE Cup and becoming the world champion in classical, rapid, and blitz chess.
