Hungary Halts Gas Exports to Ukraine: Orban Orders Reserves Kept in Storage.
Hungary Ends Natural Gas Deliveries to Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Hungary is winding down its natural gas shipments to Ukraine, choosing instead to keep those volumes in its own underground storage facilities. This move is driven by the ongoing blockade of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which has now lasted for 30 days. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the country aims to build up additional gas reserves to secure its energy supply stability.
'So far, we have successfully resisted Ukrainian blackmail, and thanks to protected prices, Hungarians pay the lowest fuel costs at the pump anywhere in Europe. But we must go further: new measures are now needed to overcome the oil blockade and ensure Hungary's safe energy supply. That is why we are gradually halting gas deliveries from Hungary to Ukraine, and we are storing the remaining gas volumes in our reserves.' Viktor Orban
Political Ramifications
The Druzhba pipeline’s status has become a central theme in Viktor Orban's political strategy. Earlier, Hungary demanded that its specialists be granted access to the pipeline, highlighting the country's push to restore oil and gas flows amid current difficulties. In response to these developments, the Hungarian government is taking steps to secure its own energy needs, a decision that will inevitably affect Ukraine's energy position.
This move by Hungary could significantly worsen the situation for Ukraine, which relies on imported gas to meet its energy demands. Against the backdrop of Europe’s broader energy crisis—fueled by geopolitical risks and shifting supply patterns—the stability of energy deliveries is increasingly critical for both nations. Restoring flows through the Druzhba pipeline may prove essential to improving the region’s energy outlook.
