The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will send experts to Syria.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) plans to send its experts to Syria as soon as a connection is established with the new government and when the security situation allows.
"After establishing contact with the new authorities in Syria and as soon as the security situation permits, the next step for the OPCW will be to send a group of experts from the Secretariat to Syria," said OPCW Director-General Ambassador Fernando Arias.
This will allow the OPCW to gather the necessary information about facilities related to chemical weapons and assess the work that needs to be done.
The fact that Syria has not declared the full extent of its chemical weapons program and that chemical weapons have been used in the country was mentioned in Fernando Arias's speech.
The OPCW Director-General emphasized: 'The political and security situation in the country remains unstable.'
The goal of the OPCW is the complete elimination of chemical weapons in Syria and to hold the former Syrian government and other perpetrators accountable internationally.
