British research: 42% of glasses wearers risk their eyesight during sports.
Sports activities without glasses
According to The Sun: More than a third of people who wear glasses have engaged in sports without seeing well. A survey of 2000 people with nearsightedness or farsightedness showed that 42% of participants had trouble judging distance or made mistakes by removing their glasses during competitions.
At the same time, 11% of respondents were injured due to poor vision. More than half (52%) avoided wearing glasses while playing sports for fear they might break, 44% believe their glasses might fall off during exercises, and 32% complained that sweat made it hard for them to stay in place.
Issues with glasses during physical activity
At the same time, 29% of respondents expressed fear of fogged lenses, and football and running activities became the main reasons why their glasses get damaged. Only 37% are confident that their glasses will stay in place during activity, and 29% believe it hinders their enjoyment of favorite activities.
A third of survey participants admitted to feeling anxious wearing glasses in active or dangerous situations where there is a risk of falling.
Giles Edmonds, Director of Clinical Services at Specsavers, which conducted this research, noted: 'This problem is more common than people may think. In a sports environment, glasses are at greater risk of damage, and the study results show that people choose to do without them.'
Damaged or broken frames and scratched lenses are the most common consequences. 64% of respondents reported they also had problems with glasses in everyday life. The most common causes were accidental drops, sitting on glasses, or falling asleep in them.
Corrective options and alternatives to glasses
Among those who faced damage, 69% tried to repair their glasses themselves, but 42% admitted that their attempts were unsuccessful.
Among athletes, 32% use contact lenses or sports glasses to avoid complications.
Giles Edmonds also noted: 'Contact lenses are a natural choice for maintaining perfect vision during sports. They do not fog up, do not slip due to sweat, and do not break during contact sports.'
He added that daily contact lenses are ideal for sports as they are fresh, hygienic, and easily replaced in case of loss or damage.
SWNSThis study highlights the importance of comfortable vision during physical activity. Using contact lenses can be the optimal solution for those who participate in sports and do not want to deal with problems related to glasses. This allows them to focus on their activities and minimize the risk of injury.
Moreover, statistics show that the issue of inadequate vision among athletes is relevant, so it is important to pay attention to appropriate alternatives to ensure safe and comfortable conditions for training and competitions.
