According to The Sun: The owner of WH Smith has emerged as one of the main contenders to acquire the UK arm of the accessory chain Claire's.

The investment group Modella Capital is in talks with the American parent company Ames Watson regarding a potential deal.

Last month, Claire's appointed administrators for its business in the UK and Ireland after filing for bankruptcy in the US.

Administrators from consulting firm Interpath are actively seeking potential buyers to secure the future of the chain in the UK market.

However, according to Sky News, Modella has already developed deal stages directly with Ames Watson, paving its way to success in negotiations.

Still, there is no guarantee that a deal will be struck — a separate agreement with Interpath still needs to be signed.

306 Claire's stores in the UK and Ireland continue to operate as usual while consultants consider next steps.

Modella acquired WH Smith stores earlier this year and plans to change their branding to TGJones.

The company gained popularity in UK retail by buying the hobby goods chain Hobbycraft last year, as well as stakes in Paperchase and Tie Rack.

Representatives from Interpath and Modella declined to comment on the situation.

WAGE INCREASES AT AMAZON

Amazon announced wage increases for its employees above the inflation rate, aiming to improve public perception of its pay.

At the end of the month, the minimum starting wage will rise by 5.9% to £14.30 per hour or by 5.5% to £15.30 per hour in certain regions.

Thus, the salary for front-line employees will start at a minimum of £29,744.

According to Amazon, this increase will affect tens of thousands of employees in the UK; the minimum starting wage has risen by 43% since 2022.

Amazon's UK head, John Bumfrey, stated: 'Our front-line workers are essential to our success, and we are pleased to increase our minimum starting wage.'

'Besides this competitive pay, we also offer industry-leading benefits and significant opportunities for career growth for all employees.'

PENSION PANIC

Savers are actively withdrawing their funds from pension accounts, fearing that Chancellor Rachel Reeves may cut tax benefits in the autumn budget at the end of November.

The financial oversight body recorded an 8.6% increase in withdrawal frequency last year, with nearly a million individuals accessing their pension funds.

Pensions Minister Torsten Bell did not rule out the possibility of cutting tax benefits.

FLIGHT ISSUES

Flight delays have worsened compared to pre-pandemic levels as major airlines struggle to stick to schedules, reports Which?.

British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, TUI, Jet2, and Wizz Air all show decreased punctuality compared to 2019, with TUI in the worst position.

Only 59.2% of its flights in the UK managed to depart within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.

Airlines partially blame this on the shortage of air transport and strikes.

Recent news about business in the UK indicates active and even troubling changes in retail. Acquisitions and deals, like the potential acquisition of Claire's, suggest that companies are looking for ways to adapt in conditions of economic uncertainty. Meanwhile, the wage increases at Amazon might indicate competition in the labor market, as companies try to attract and retain their workers during tough times. The situation in aviation reflects similar challenges faced by consumers in response to broader financial pressures.
