Kyiv’s Winter Readiness Falls Short Compared to Kharkiv, Energy Expert Warns.
According to Espreso.tv: As Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid persist, winter preparedness has emerged as a critical national concern. According to Volodymyr Omelchenko, director of energy and infrastructure programs at the Razumkov Centre, the government is actively working on the issue, but progress varies significantly across regions.
‘Some areas are better prepared, others are worse,’ Omelchenko stated.
While improvements have been seen in Kharkiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr, the situation in Kyiv is markedly behind. Omelchenko stressed that planning should have started much earlier.
‘The time to think about it was not in July, but back in March,’ he noted.
Investments in Energy Infrastructure
In the first half of 2023, Ukraine brought online 332 MW of capacity from cogeneration and other gas-fired units. The government aims to add another 1.5 GW by the end of the year. These steps are essential for maintaining energy stability during the winter months.
On July 27, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked recent defense-sector personnel changes to the need for a tough winter ahead. Energy security and winter readiness remain urgent priorities for the country amid ongoing challenges.
Given the complex conditions Ukraine faces, coordination between the central government and regional authorities is vital. Significant investment in energy infrastructure is required to prevent power outages during the coldest months. Keeping the public informed about preparation levels will also help citizens adapt to potential disruptions.
