Panama reached out to the United Nations due to statements made by US President Donald Trump regarding the Panama Canal.

The Panamanian ambassador to the UN, Eloy Alfaro de Alba, wrote a letter to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, stating that these remarks are unacceptable according to the UN Charter.

The letter was also sent to 15 members of the UN Security Council.

The Panama Canal is a waterway that connects the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. It was built with the involvement of the United States in the early 20th century and is located on the Isthmus of Panama.

In 1977, Panama and the United States signed agreements to transfer control of the canal to Panama, and joint management was terminated in 1999.

During his inauguration, Trump stated that Panama broke promises and handed the canal to China. However, the canal is not managed by China, but its two ports are operated by a subsidiary of CK Hutchison Holdings from Hong Kong.
