Parents lose £1354 in child benefits: how to continue payments.
According to The Sun: Today, thousands of students will eagerly await their results, but parents also need to be mindful of an important step that needs to be taken to avoid missing out on financial assistance.
'If your child is aged 16 to 19 and continues their education after finishing school, you must continue your claim for child benefit.'
Benefits can amount to up to £1,354 a year for the first or only child, and up to £897 a year for each additional child. This means £26.05 a week for one child and £17.25 a week for each additional child.
'However, payments will automatically stop on August 31 or after your child turns 16, unless parents continue their claim when their child continues their education.'
This means that parents of a child who continues their education have almost two weeks to notify HMRC; otherwise, their payments will stop.
'Teenagers can be expensive, and child benefit is an important source of income for your household.'
'As soon as you know what your teenager will be doing in September, don’t miss the moment. You can continue your claim in just a few minutes through the HMRC app or online to ensure your payments continue.'
You can receive incentive cash assistance as long as your child is under 19 years old and enrolled in an approved education or training program.
What is child benefit?
You receive child benefit if you are responsible for raising a child who is under 16 years old, or 20 years old if they are in approved education or training. This payment is intended to help parents cover the costs of childcare.
'Additionally, parents of children aged nine months or older can now apply for free childcare hours.'
From September, parents will have the opportunity to receive up to 30 hours a week for children aged nine months to four years. Registering for the program can save you up to £7,500 in childcare costs.
More help for parents
Childcare can be an expensive affair. Here’s how you can receive assistance:
- 30 hours of free childcare - parents of three and four-year-olds can apply for 30 hours of free childcare a week. To qualify, you must usually work at least 16 hours a week at the national living wage or minimum wage level and earn less than £100,000 a year.
- Tax credits - For children up to 20 years old, some families may receive assistance with childcare costs.
- Child vouchers - If your employer offers childcare vouchers, you could receive up to £55 a week in tax and national insurance savings. This program is open to new applicants until October 4, 2018, when it is planned that tax-free childcare will replace vouchers.
- Tax-free childcare - Available for working families and the self-employed, for every £8 that you put in, the government will add another £2.
The HM Revenue and Customs National Agency encourages parents to remember to continue their claim for child benefit if their children continue their education after finishing school. This can help families save a significant amount of money on childcare and educational expenses.
