Armenia’s Ruling Party Secures Nearly 50% of Vote in Parliamentary Election.
Armenia's 2023 Parliamentary Election
According to UATV: On June 8, 2023, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's 'Civil Contract' party won Armenia's parliamentary election with 727,160 votes—representing 49.81% of the total cast. Voter turnout stood at 58.97%, a slight dip from the 61% recorded in the 2017 election. These elections were held amid ongoing regional tensions and domestic debates over political reform.
Election Results
Based on the outcome, 'Civil Contract' secured 61 seats in parliament. Other parties also gained representation:
- 'Strong Armenia' won 28 seats with 23% of the vote;
- 'Armenia' took 11 seats, capturing 9.94%;
- 'Prosperous Armenia' earned 5 seats with 4% of the vote.
Voting occurred across 2,005 polling stations, with results processed from 1,878 of them.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented on the results, stating:
“This means that the citizens of the Republic of Armenia have risen to defend the state, independence, future, and peace.” — Nikol Pashinyan
Meanwhile, Samvel Karapetyan, a representative from the 'Strong Armenia' party, noted: 'I want to tell all of you, be assured, the elections are not over yet; there are still no final results.'
The parliamentary election results reflect a stable political landscape in Armenia, despite the lower voter turnout. The victory of 'Civil Contract' suggests continued support for Pashinyan's reform agenda and state-building efforts. At the same time, the presence of multiple parties in parliament ensures political competition and room for debate on the country's future direction.
