Six years later, he kept his word and became one of the most talented mixed martial arts fighters in Europe.

Paul Hughes overcame a career-threatening injury and became an MMA star PFL

However, this path was challenging. Paul experienced numerous injuries, including three arm fractures that threatened his career early on.

Hughes was born in Sydney but lived in Londonderry from the age of eight months.

Before making his debut in 2017 at the age of 19, he already had a successful amateur career. However, during one fight, an accident occurred - he broke his arm.

Problems did not leave him, as a few months later, he suffered a re-fracture - doctors warned him about the risk of ending his career.

“I really thought that was it. My dream was over,” recalls Hughes. “It was all I ever dreamed of, and now I was risking losing it all.”

At 28, Hughes recalled those feelings when he remembered sitting in the car driving to the hospital.

“I just cried and called my mom, letting her know I was running late because I had to rush to the hospital.”

He tried to diminish the significance of the events, but upon receiving the news, he felt despair in the waiting room.

“When she walked into the room to comfort me, I relived that moment very clearly.”

After the doctors told him he could no longer fight, Hughes returned to Sydney to rest and recover, continuing to train with one arm and earning money through odd jobs.

However, after his arm recovered, his dreams of a career in MMA began to revive.

“I remember the last day at the construction site and promised myself I would never work in that field again. And that’s exactly what happened,” says Paul.

In 2019, he returned to Belfast to step into the ring again and give his all to the sport.

“As I've said before, he tried to avoid this rematch. He did everything he could to delay it,” noted Paul. “But now we are here, and I am focused on Friday.”

“I never gave up on the dream of becoming a world champion, and now I am here.”
