Match of the Day host is actually not Mark: what is Chapman’s real name

According to The Sun: Football fans were shocked to learn that the name Mark Chapman turned out to not be his real name.

The popular BBC Sport presenter has long been a familiar face on screens, known for his calm demeanor and serious approach. However, many had no idea that his real name is not Mark at all.

It turns out the presenter’s real name is ANDRIY.

Mark is his middle name, which he chose to use during his career on shows like Match of the Day, Final Score, and Radio 5 Live.

Chapman is one of three presenters alongside Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan who replaced Gary Lineker.

This fact became a topic of discussion on social media as fans stumbled upon his real name in public records and professional profiles.

One fan asked on X: “Wait... his name is Andriy? Where did that come from??”

Another joked: “I've been calling this guy Mark for years. Turns out we were on a nickname basis all this time.”

“Andriy Mark Chapman sounds like a person who reads the news. Mark Chapman is the one who presents football.”

While it's not uncommon for public figures to use their middle names in their professional work, this revelation came as a surprise to many considering his long-standing presence on British television and radio.

Chapman, 51, started his career at BBC Radio 1 as a sports newsreader, gradually moving to hosting football shows. In 2013, he replaced Colin Murray as the host of Match of the Day 2.

Known for his witty humor and calm style, he has become one of the BBC's favorite presenters — fans often refer to him simply as “Chappers.”

Despite the surprise regarding his real name, it’s unlikely that viewers will start calling him 'Andriy' anytime soon.

This situation confirms how important it is for public figures to have a name that’s easy to remember. In the sports world, where branding and recognition play a key role, such details can influence fan perceptions. Will this change fans’ attitudes towards the presenter? Time will tell, but the news itself has already captured attention and sparked considerable discussion online.
