Kyiv has suspended the application process for renaming streets in honor of fallen soldiers

In Kyiv, the application process for renaming streets in honor of soldiers who died in combat has been temporarily stopped. This is being done to avoid situations where multiple families seek to rename the same street. This was reported by Victoria Mukha, a member of the Kyiv City Council and the head of the permanent commission on culture, tourism, and public communication.

She also noted that Kyiv is looking for new ways to honor the fallen soldiers, in collaboration with historians, scientists, experts, community activists, and the families of the deceased. A Coordinating Council has been created for the preparation and implementation of the Memorialization Concept in Kyiv as part of the initiative of Mayor Vitalii Klitschko.

In the capital, 145 memorial signs have already been installed on buildings and educational institutions. However, there is a growing number of requests for establishing new memorial signs.

There are also more cases where several families who have lost their loved ones claim to rename the same street. To avoid conflicts, it has been decided to suspend the application process for street renaming. Currently, there are 59 streets, squares, and alleys in Kyiv that have been named in honor of participants and events of the Russo-Ukrainian War, as well as 8 parks and squares.

The Kyiv City Council has also identified 47 memorial objects and decorative elements that need to be removed from the public space of the city. Among them are the monuments to Oleksandr Boichenko and Mykola Ostrovskyi, the pedestals from the monument to Vladimir Lenin, the memorial stone 'Komsomolska Alley,' a star on the roof of a building on Khreshchatyk Street, and others.
