Trump announces breakthrough in peace talks: what is known about the plan.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced "significant progress" in developing a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He is once again sending his special representatives — Dan Driscoll to Kyiv and Steve Witkoff to Moscow, and he himself is ready to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin only when the agreement reaches its "final or concluding stage."
Negotiations and Trump's optimism
According to reports, the American delegation headed by Dan Driscoll held talks with the Russians in the United Arab Emirates. In Abu Dhabi, according to Axios and the Financial Times, there was also a Ukrainian delegation led by the head of the GUR, Kyrylo Budanov, who communicated with both sides.
Trump announced progress overnight on social media platform Truth Social:
"The initial 28-point peace plan developed by the United States has been improved with the involvement of both sides, and only a few points of disagreement remain... I look forward to meeting with President Zelensky and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the agreement on ending this war is FINAL or at a concluding stage."
Sensitive issues and Kyiv's position
Trump's optimism raises questions, as the most problematic demands from Moscow, such as the cession of Ukrainian territories and restrictions on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, were "set aside" during the negotiations in Geneva.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need to discuss these "sensitive issues" personally with Trump and European leaders.
"The framework is on the table, and we are ready to move forward together — with the United States of America, with the personal participation of President Trump, and with Europe, with leaders, and with all partners who have the strengths and capabilities to help. And I am ready to meet with President Trump — there are sensitive moments to discuss, they still exist, and we believe that the involvement of European leaders can be helpful,"
— he said.
Trump believes that for Kyiv it is "more rational to give up its lands," as they "could be captured by Russia anyway in a few months."
"Do you want to fight and lose another 60-50 thousand people? Or do you want to do something now? In some cases, territories will be transferred in the opposite direction. (…) A border cannot be drawn through a highway or in the middle of a city. That’s just not how it works. It’s a long complicated process,"
— said Donald Trump.
Compromising materials on special representative Witkoff
Following the announcement of Steve Witkoff's new trip to Moscow, Bloomberg published materials that cast doubt on his impartiality.
"The 28-point plan" is a Russian fabrication: a transcript of a phone call between Putin's aides revealed that the so-called "28-point plan" is purely a Russian creation that Witkoff was supposed to present to the White House, passing it off as his own.
There was a phone call between Witkoff and an assistant to Putin, during which it became known that Witkoff:
advised Ushakov to organize a phone call between Trump and Putin.
said that it was Putin who should talk to Trump.
"swore the deepest respect for the Russian dictator."
Commenting on these recordings, Trump stated that this is "normal practice," and "all negotiators, in his opinion, conduct business this way."
The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia remains on the agenda, and efforts mediated by the U.S. and other countries may be key to achieving peace. While negotiations are ongoing, the situation remains tense, and the results could influence the development of events in the region and international relations as a whole. It is important to observe how both sides respond to new proposals and whether they can find common ground in such a complicated situation.
