On October 9, 1904, Mykola Bazhan was born - an outstanding Ukrainian poet who managed to survive during the repressions and preserve his poetic talent.

Beginning of creativity

In his childhood and youth, Bazhan was far from communism. His father was an officer in the Russian army, and then served in the Ukrainian People's Republic army, while his mother was from the Ukrainian nobility. Bazhan quickly became a well-known poet. His works were noticed by famous poets Mykhailo Semenko and Les Kurbas. In 1929, his poem "Hoffman's Night" and the cycle "Buildings" were published, making him one of the best poets of his generation.

In the 1930s, he was accused of spreading "anti-Soviet" sentiments and being involved with such groups. He agreed to cooperate with the secret services, but did so reluctantly and did not fully fulfill his obligations.

Subsequently, he became known as one of the leading poets of the USSR. His works were a propaganda of patriotism and a sense of national dignity. Bazhan was the editor of the newspaper "For Soviet Ukraine" and a member of the government of the Ukrainian SSR.

Award reception and political career

In 1949, Bazhan received the Order of Lenin, the highest award of the Ukrainian SSR. He was also a co-author of the anthem of the Ukrainian SSR. At the same Time, he was actively involved in politics, becoming the deputy head of the government. Bazhan also made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture and science.
