Anti-Ukrainian rhetoric of Orban produces a reverse effect: expert on rating losses.
According to ТСН: The policy of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which has an anti-Ukrainian tint, partly contributes to the growing support for his party among certain segments of voters.
Changes in electoral moods
This was stated in the broadcast of Espresso by political science candidate Maria Geletiy, an expert on international relations. She noted that 'if we are talking about the support of the Hungarian population for Viktor Orban, that is, we are talking about the surveys that exist today, then his party has very significantly lost support among Hungarians. His opponent Peter Madyar is starting to gain greater support, and his party is actually leading in the polls now.'
Influences on ratings
The expert also noted that Orban's emotional campaigns against Ukraine and the demonstration of contacts with the Kremlin somehow affect his ratings. According to her,
“it really helps his party gain a little more support”.
Changes in administrative division
Geletiy reminded that in 2024 changes in the administrative division are expected in Hungary, which will also affect the political balance.
“It is important to mention that in 2024 there will be certain changes in administrative units in Hungary. That is, they have redrawn the electoral districts and reduced them in Budapest, where voters are likely not to vote for Orban, but have increased the number of districts in the region that traditionally supports his party”.
Position on Ukraine’s territory
Furthermore, it was previously reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed the opinion that Ukraine's territory should be divided, considering this 'the only possible long-term solution'. It is also known that Orban stated Hungary's readiness to provide a platform for peace talks regarding Ukraine.
The current political situation in Hungary demonstrates a complex game between supporting internal voters and external relations with Ukraine. In conditions where electoral moods are changing, attention should be paid to how government actions affect the development strategy of political forces in the country. The emotional rhetoric of Orban, noted by experts, may be difficult to ignore, but the scale and consequences of these changes remain in question.
