Over 1.15 Million Ukrainians in the EU Keep Their Status: New Restrictions Don't Apply to Them.
Confirmation of Temporary Protection Status
According to Novyny.live: The European Commission has confirmed that more than 1.15 million Ukrainian men currently holding temporary protection status in EU countries will not lose it due to new restrictions. These measures will only affect future refugees. All EU member states have agreed to extend temporary protection status beyond March 2027.
Currently, 4.33 million Ukrainians benefit from temporary protection across the EU. The top host countries for these refugees are:
- Germany
- Poland
- Czechia
The European Commission has also denied any plans to deport men of military age back to Ukraine.
Korinna Ullrich stated: 'These rules will not affect Ukrainians who are already in Europe.'
This underscores the EU's commitment to protecting those who have already been granted status within the Union. The next discussion on refugee status is expected at the EU Council meeting on Internal Affairs, scheduled for June 4.
Support for Ukrainian Refugees
This news highlights the European Union's dedication to supporting Ukrainian refugees who have already received temporary protection, despite new restrictions for those planning to leave the country. The extension of status validity until 2027 reflects the ongoing need for protection given the current situation in Ukraine and regional instability. The upcoming EU Council meeting may open new avenues for further support and regulation of refugee rights in Europe. For context, this policy affects millions who fled the war since 2022, and the EU has consistently sought to balance security concerns with humanitarian obligations.
